Warm spices, red wine, and bourbon make this traditional Nordic Christmas drink a favorite in our home during the holiday season.
Swedish Glögg
Ingredients

- 1/2 cup Rum
- 2 tbsp Blanched, slivered almonds
- 2 tbsp Raisins
- 6 Orange slices (optional)
Glögg
- 1 bottle Red wine (750 ml)
- ½ cup Cane sugar
- 1 tbsp Green cardamom pods
- 1/2 tbsp Whole cloves
- 3 inch Cinnamon sticks
- 2.5 inch Ginger root sliced
- 2 tbsp Raisins
- Strips of orange peel from one orange
- 1½ cup Bourbon
Instructions
- Prepare the garnish by soaking the almonds and raisins in the rum at room temperature for a few hours.
- In a heavy-bottomed pan, combine all the glogg ingredients (except bourbon) and heat to just below the simmering point (about 170 F).
- Add the bourbon and simmer (not boil) for about 2 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and let stand and steep for one hour.
- Strain to remove the fruit and spices and gently reheat the drink.
- Add a tablespoon of rum-soaked almonds and raisins to each serving glass, garnish with a slice of orange, and serve.
